Sugar Smart Exeter

For those of you who haven’t heard of the Sugar Smart Exeter campaign; here is a brief overview.

The Sugar Smart campaign has come about as a result of increasing concerns about the nations health and wellbeing. As a Public Health Nutritionist, this has been an going concern and I have seen the problem grow, at a startling pace, over the last 25 years. It was recognised that national and local action needs to be taken to raise awareness of the real impact of the high levels of sugar we consume in everyday food and drink.

Sugar Smart is about increasing awareness, increasing choice and fairness through food availability and reducing the aggressive promotion of unhealthy foods. It is a Jamie Oliver initiative along with ‘Sustain’ and is about being Sugar Smart NOT Sugar free.

We are trying to encourage organisations (hospitals, sports centres, schools, businesses, large employers, restaurants etc) to take assertive action to change the type of foods and drinks they offer/promote in order to make healthy food and drink more affordable and accessible.

For example to voluntarily reformulate recipes to actively reduce the amount of sugar in baked items such as cakes and muffins; to promote the availability of water to drink and not, for example, have sweet, sugar-laden drinks in vending machines in leisure centres and hospitals.

Please see more examples of ‘pledges’ on the www.sugarsmart.org website and consider becoming a Sugar Smart Ambassador. For more information on how to get involved please contact me enquiries@nutritioninpractice.co.uk
